whoa. today is my last day in the office at refinery29 before i start my maternity leave. having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that the day is finally here.

gonna miss seeing the faces of the creative team on a daily basis, especially these photo ladies!

DIY: IKEA HACKED SHELVES

finally getting around to posting a project chris and i have been working on for what feels like forever. we needed shelves in the baby room to make additional storage, but didn't want to pay a fortune for them.

taking advantage of our creative thinking and DIY skills, we came up with this ikea hack to make the perfect shelves

we started with these and these vittsjo shelves from ikea. Chris sawed off the metal tabs that held the middle bar of the long shelf so it could be removed and make a longer, cleaner looking shelf, then we painted both units white.

to give it a more finished look we got oak boards cut to size from home depot, cut small squares in the corners so they fit snuggly, and stained them to the tint we wanted.

i also bought these baskets from ikea and painted them white for uniformed storage that blends in a bit. we're super happy with the way they turned out - totally worth the extra work! some more pics:

side note: chris is a TOTAL champ for being up for doing all this. it was definitely a process and i'm lucky to have such a great husband who will jump in and help me with my crazy projects.

speaking of weddings, i made bride and groom cupcakes for a bridal shower we threw for coworkers last week. think they turned out pretty cute!

tomorrow one of my best friends in the world is getting all gussied up, wearing the most beautiful dress she'll probably rock in her entire life, and saying 'i do' to the man she loves

I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE

one of my best friends in the world is getting married on saturday and it's making me go back and reminisce about my own wedding weekend and all the magic that happened during those days.

thinking back to us saying 'i do' and walking out of the ceremony to "i believe in a thing called love" by the darkness still makes me smile uncontrollably.

THE COOLEST BABY BLANKET THAT EVER WAS

somehow forgot to post about the most amazing hand made present any mom-to-be could ask for. my sister made this ridiculously perfect baby blanket for our baby girl and i couldn't love it more

so rad to think about how our little girl will have this to snuggle in for years and years to come.

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY

i was doing some reminiscing and realized it was exactly four years ago today that chris and i moved into our apartment

MY BEEF WITH INSTAGRAM

don't get me wrong, i love instagram. i love scrolling through my endless feed checking up on what everyone's doing through photos. it's much better than facebook with the ads and page suggestions and games. my beef with it comes from how it's effecting my own picture taking.

pre-Gram, i took all my photos on film. but now i find myself splitting up my picture making into two categories: things that work for social media, and those that are better for film - and film seems to be losing the battle more and more.

it probably makes it worse that since i've been pregnant i had to stop carrying my bulky film camera around all the time to try and save my spine.

hopefully once it's nice outside and i can travel again and move and shake a little more i'll be able to shoot more film. at least that's what i'll tell myself for now

DIY PINEAPPLE CAKE

i made a pineapple cake for our executive creative director at R29's birthday. totally forgot to take process photos (sorry!), but pretty excited about how it turned out

and she loved it, which is all that really matters!

today my mom and sister are flying in for the weekend for some much needed QT and to do some fun baby shopping and prep. so excited to have them here to help me and see all the stuff i've been working on over the past couple months.

WEEKEND DIY: BABY MOBILE

i've been wanting to make a colorful baby mobile for a while now and finally got around to it this weekend.

i cut the flat part off of two hangers and used pliers to make loops on the ends, then attached them with thread at the cross point. i made a handful of 3D diamonds in two sizes and tied them at different lengths to the base.

DIY SHARK CAKE

we had a small dinner to celebrate chris's birthday yesterday, so naturally i had to make a cake. this year i decided to make a shark to go along with some other aquatic themed gifts. here's how i did it:

i made two cakes in different sized bowls and one cake in a flat round cake pan and cut them at an angle to make the head look like it was coming out of the water. i steadied the cake by adding wooden rods down through the top to the base.

while i was sculpting the shark my caking-partner-in-crime, andrea, worked on making teeth out of white fondant. i stuck toothpicks in the ends of each 'tooth' so they would stick into the cake once it was time to add them to the head.

i started with the base colors then added details and the jagged teeth. we finished it off by painting red food coloring 'blood' to the ends of the teeth.
